Video Blog: Our Mountain Hotel and Free Gondola Rides

Aug 29, 2008 Author: orfilms@gmail.com (slashfilm.com) | Filed under: Best Movies 2008

For all the people who have emailed, commented, and called… yes, we made it to our hotel okay. I probably should have posted an update. I figured that everyone would have realized this occurred when they saw that I had uploaded the videos in the late hours of the morning.

The hotel we’re staying at is in the mountains, about 20 minutes away from the main street. When we finally checked in at 1:00am last night, we could see nothing but the stars in the sky. It was a pleasant surprise to wake up and find this incredible view outside the window in my room. Day 2 of my 28 Day Movie adventure begins.

And as it turns out, the best way to get downtown involves taking a 15-minute ride over the mountains on a gondola lift. Balance has never been one of my strengths, and skiing is something I’ve just never attempted. Although, I have seen my share of ski towns through my years of attending the Sundance Film Festival in Park City Utah.

Even though on the surface, both festivals seem simular, Telluride is so very different than Sundance. I feel like this is what Sundance must have felt like 15 years ago. It’s a lot less crowded. We walked to the main street and were able to find a half empty restaurant to grab lunch. Just the fact that we were able to navigate around the city without having to play a constant game of navigating in and out and around other festival-goers, says a lot.

Right now I’m sitting in a coffee shop on the town’s main drag, posting this update. For me, the festival will begin later tonight with the David Fincher Tribute, which includes a 20-minute preview of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I will also be seeing an Irish film called Kiss at midnight. Check back for updates. I promise the film coverage will begin tonight.

Telluride provides press with a few extra tickets to the big screenings, and it seems like my tickets may have been lost in some sort of mix up. I’ve been in touch with the press office trying to fix the situation, I’m hoping that they will be able to resolve the issue.

Family Guy Movie Set To Start Within Year

Aug 29, 2008 Author: john@themovieblog.com (John Campea) | Filed under: Best Movies 2008

FamilyguypartyIt looks like the wheels have started to spin for a Family Guy film. We get wind of this news from moviesonline:

In an interview with TV Week MacFarlane says, “We want to do it. And it is time. In the past six months we have seriously started talking about it. And my hope is that we will get it going within the next year. Doing the show is a seven-day a week process, so I don’t know how we will squeeze in a movie. But we will figure it out. I have an idea about what it will be. It’ s definitely something you wouldn’t be able to do on the show. That’s the only reason to do a movie.”

I’ m not a fan of Family Guy, I don’t hate the show and will watch from time to time - but it isn’t something that I follow on a regular basis. I do have some interest in seeing a film however. The episodes are like clip shows, and that’s fine for 30 min, but for a feature I am guessing that a proper story will be needed. If they hammer out a fable and deviate from the norm, I think we will have a welcome change for both fans and foes of the franchise.

Now we wait for them to begin writing. When news of developments start to surface, we will be sure to bring them to your attention.

International Friends - what are your thoughts on the announcement of a Family Guy feature?

No End In Sight Set For You Tube Launch

No End In Sight Poster-1

The people responsible for the documentary No End In Sight are letting the world see it for free starting Sept 1, 2008. We get the following news release thanks to our friends at the movieweb:

Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary Feature and winner of the Documentary Special Jury Prize at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, the first film of its kind to examine the American policies that sent Iraq spiraling into a civil war, will also be the first widely released feature film to screen in its entirety on YouTube starting on September 1 and continuing through the 2008 presidential election on Tuesday, November 4. The film will be featured on its own YouTube channel (YouTube.com/NoEndInSight) and available to anyone with a computer and high-speed internet connection, as well as via the YouTube service on broadband-connected TiVo Series3 or TiVo HD DVRs, which enables subscribers to watch the myriad content of YouTube on their televisions. No End in Sight is being made available free to the public to reveal the facts about the Bush Administration’s invasion and occupation of Iraq to voters concerned with the issues of national security and the adverse economic impact of the war when making decisions in this crucial election.

No End in Sight is a jaw-dropping, insider’s tale of the ignorance, incompetence and blind ambition that ensnared the U.S. in a war without a post-invasion plan. In the film, high ranking officials tasked with rebuilding Iraq, such as former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, Ambassador Barbara Bodine, Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, who served as Chief of Staff for Secretary of State Colin Powell, and General Jay Garner, who was in charge of the occupation in early 2003, recount principal errors in U.S. policy which opened the door to the insurgency and chaos that engulf Iraq today. From insufficient troop numbers to secure the country to alienating the Iraqi people, No End in Sight details how a swift military victory descended into a quagmire.

I haven’ t seem this film, but will certainly be watching it with al of you the first of September. I love when documentary filmmakers release their stuff for free online. Over the past few months I have seen The Century Of The Self, Manufacturing Consent and The Corporation all on google video.

All of us will be able to watch this film together, for free, and we have a unique opportunity to discuss it from all corners of the globe. I love the internet.

Vadim Perelman to Direct Poltergeist Remake From Boogeyman Scribes?

Aug 29, 2008 Author: orfilms@gmail.com (slashfilm.com) | Filed under: Best Movies 2008

On the newly posted After Dark show, a /Film fan wrote in detesting MGM’s planned Poltergeist remake. Not only did this topic snowball into the most tasteless Heather O’Rourke/pizza joke imaginable, we also contemplated whether the project qualifies as the first remake of a Steven Spielberg movie. And if so, is Jaws within reach? The freaky 1982 supernatural classic was officially helmed by Tobe Hooper, sure, but Spielberg’s directorial contribution remains a point of contention amongst horror fans. Today, Bloody Disgusting reports that Vadim Perelmen, a rather left-field choice, is in “heavy talks” to direct the unnecessary remake.

Perelman debuted with 2003’s House of Sand and Fog, a well received literary adaptation that garnered three Oscar noms, including a Best Actor nod for Ben Kingsley. Earlier this year, his follow-up, The Life Before Her Eyes starring Uma Thurman and Marilyn Manson’s muse, was memorably defecated on by the majority of critics. Perelman’s penchant for literature purportedly played a part in his attachment to the long-planned adaptation of Atlas Shrugged. Here’s a quote from his entry on Wikipedia

“I don’t want to spend a year of my life working on a film that does not resonate with me on a poetic level,” says Perelman. “Since great scripts are a rare commodity, I realized that I have to create my own opportunities and not wait for the right project to come along—for fate to smile upon me.”

Thanks for showing up, fate. I’m pretty sure a facsimile of this guy was in my screenwriting class. Big chain smoker, wrist model. Just last week, Peter lashed into the announcement that Juliet Snowden and Stiles White [Ed.-poetic name combination] were hired to pen the new (and undoubtedly improved) Poltergeist. Their writing credits include the remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds for M.Bay’s Platinum Dunes, Alex Proyas’ Knowing with Nic Cage, and Ghost House’s sleeper hit Boogeyman. On a roll.

Discuss: What would Carol Anne say? And per our After Dark discussion, will the iPhone make an ace replacement for the original’s TV?

Final SAW V Movie Poster

Aug 29, 2008 Author: orfilms@gmail.com (slashfilm.com) | Filed under: Best Movies 2008

Lionsgate has released the final poster for SAW V. The tagline promises “You won’t believe how it ends”. One thing that has been consistent throughout all of the SAW films - they have always ended with a twist, even when it is barely logical.

In the fifth installment of the SAW franchise, Hoffman is seemingly the last person alive to carry on the Jigsaw legacy. But when his secret is threatened, Hoffman must go on the hunt to eliminate all loose ends.

Saw V hits theaters on October 24th 2008.

Update on Universal’s Slap Shot Remake

Aug 29, 2008 Author: orfilms@gmail.com (slashfilm.com) | Filed under: Best Movies 2008

Arguably the most beloved, foul-mouthed, politically incorrect sports comedy of all time, 1977’s Slap Shot will see a third direct-to-DVD sequel released later this year. Starring Leslie Nielsen, this one focuses on a “junior league” hockey team, alongside the three actors known as the Hanson Brothers (above), who have milked their pseudo-fame in all four films. Make it five. Today, courtesy of YourMovieMaven, we have an update on Universal’s planned theatrical remake of Slap Shot from screenwriter Peter Steinfeld (21, Analyze That, Be Cool)…

“Right now I’m finishing writing the re-make of the iconic hockey movie Slap Shot for Universal. I’ve never had so many people hate me for writing something they haven’t seen yet. It’s such a classic film and fans of the original feel like I’m grave-robbing or something. But I think the movie will be really fun and will capture what it’s like to play minor league hockey in 2008. We haven’t set cast yet…”

And I agree. This is a cherry on the sundae of suck. I’m sure we can look forward to remakes of Paul Newman’s Cool Hand Luke and The Hustler in the lovely future. Back in February, Steinfeld visited Johnstown, Pennsylvania where the original film took place. He hinted that the script would “adhere” to the ‘77 film and its location but needed to, “reflect how the world has changed and how the town has changed in the last 31 years. There have been huge changes to hockey in that time.”

Movies have arguably changed more, just see Linklater’s neutered, wheelchair-accessorized remake of 1976’s The Bad News Bears or the asinine fuss over Tropic Thunder’s Simple Jack. I highly doubt Universal’s Slap Shot redux will boast any lines this funny and filthy, and the American glee in getting away with murder was the, uh, point.

Max Makowski to Direct Voltron

Aug 29, 2008 Author: john@themovieblog.com (John Campea) | Filed under: Best Movies 2008

It looks like the upcoming Voltron movie has its director, Max Makowski! Ok, I don’t know who he is either. LatinoReview says:

sources tell me he’s actually a great choice. I honestly hope so and I at least give everyone the benefit of the doubt. I’m told he’s on every studio’s hot list these days because of some Sundance movie he made a few years ago about warring assassins called ONE LAST DANCE.

I am wary about giving a movie with as much summer blockbuster potential as Voltron to someone no one has ever heard of. Some kind words are spoken of him, but we have heard that before.

I would like to see some of his other stuff like this Sundance flick that has the studios clawing at him like some giant metal lion, but if he was so hot for a film he did two years ago, why didn’t he do a film then?

I don’t know. I’m holding my breath on this one, but still shaking my head.
